Velenje Excursion

VELENJE
Half-day trip
27. 08. 2026

We depart from Celje at 01:00 PM. Velenje is a half-an-hour drive away. There we visit one of the most modern mine museums in Europe. The museum tour is divided into two parts: a guided underground tour, where visitors descend within seconds by elevator, and, together with a guide and multimedia presentations, learn about the formation of coal, its discovery, and its extraction in the past and today. In the canteen that is 160 meters deep we can try a typical miners’ snack and experience a ride on a conveyor belt and an underground railway.

This is followed by a visit to the permanent exhibition on the development of Slovenian coal mining, showcasing all Slovenian coal mines, with special emphasis on the living culture of miners before 1930. Through a film narrative, visitors learn about the formation of mining colonies and life within them. Visitors who do not wish to visit the mine due to claustrophobia may visit Velenje Castle instead. It is a well-preserved Renaissance castle that overlooks the city of Velenje and offers beautiful views of the surrounding area. Today it houses a museum with exhibitions on local history, culture, and art.

Next, we continue to Velenje lake, where a guided program will take place in the area of Velenje Beach at the VISTA park area. There will be fun activities such as street racket, frisbee golf, pedalo rides, and a SUP challenge. In the early evening we return to Celje.
